The Charlotte Restaurant industry has been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions, resulting in an unprecedented loss of revenue and jobs leading to an increase in food insecurity. Burke Hospitality Group founder Tom Sasser recognized the need to mobilize the Charlotte hospitality community, and connected with Chef Ron Ahlert, Executive Director of Community Culinary School of Charlotte, to address the two immediate issues: loss of jobs and access to food. Tom and Chef Ron created a pilot program modeled on the Power of 10 initiative launched by Chef Erik Bruner-Yang in Washington, DC. CCSC is partnering with Burke restaurants, including Harpers, and Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, to employ restaurant workers and to make free meals available to furloughed CCSC students, alumni and staff, as well as to employees from the restaurant and hospitality industry who are out of work because of COVID-19 restrictions. We have raised $20,000 to support these efforts, but more is needed.
The major factor that differentiates this effort from other food-sharing programs is that the funds raised through Power of 10 Charlotte will provide jobs to displaced restaurant employees and feed CCSC students and alumni as well as restaurant and hospitality industry employees in need.

Community Culinary School of Charlotte (CCSC) is a nonprofit organization that provides workforce development training and job placement assistance in the food service industry for adults who face barriers to long-term successful employment. Founded in 1997, our training program is a creative solution to the interwoven problems of unemployment, hunger and homelessness. We focus on three core values: financial self-sufficiency, personal development and economic mobility. The proverb, “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime,” demonstrates CCSC’s approach to achieving long-term improvement in the lives of our students and their families, as well as in our community.
The CRVA works to deliver experiences that uniquely enrich the lives of our visitors and residents. Through leadership in destination development, marketing and venue management expertise, the CRVA leads efforts to maximize the region’s economic potential through visitor spending, creating jobs and opportunities for the community.
Tito’s Handmade Vodka is America’s Original Craft Vodka. In 1995, Bert “Tito” Beveridge obtained the first legal permit to distill in Texas and created Tito’s Handmade Vodka. We batch distill our corn-based vodka using old-fashioned pot stills and the vodka is naturally Gluten-Free. Tito’s Handmade Vodka is distilled and bottled by Fifth Generation Inc. in Austin, Texas on the very same land where the whole venture started.
